Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization. From the ballot box to the classroom, the thousands of dedicated workers, organizers, leaders and members who make up the NAACP continue to fight for social justice for all Americans

Mission

The NAACP insures the political, educational, social and economic equality of minority groups and citizens; achieves equality of rights and eliminates race prejudice among the citizens of the United States; removes all barriers of racial discrimination through the democratic processes; seeks to enact and enforce federal, state, and local laws securing civil rights; informs the public of the adverse effects of racial discrimination and seeks its elimination; educates persons as to their constitutional rights and to take all lawful action in furtherance of these principles.

The vision of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is to ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights and there is no racial hatred or racial discrimination.

Action
Action

The NAACP works at the national, regional and local level to secure civil rights through advocacy for supportive legislation and by the implementation of our Strategic Initiatives. The NAACP also stands poised to defend civil rights wherever and whenever they are threatened.

Objectives

The following statement of objectives is found on the first page of the NAACP Constitution: The principal objectives of the Association shall be:

  1. To ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of all citizens

  2. To achieve equality of rights and eliminate race prejudice among the citizens of the United States

  3. To remove all barriers of racial discrimination through democratic processes

  4. To seek enactment and enforcement of federal, state and local laws securing civil rights

  5. To inform the public of the adverse effects of racial discrimination and to seek its elimination

  6. To educate persons as to their constitutional rights and to take all lawful action to secure the exercise   thereof, and to take any other lawful action in furtherance of these objectives, consistent with the  NAACPs Articles of Incorporation and this Constitution.
